Overcome the Fear of Giving Birth

Trust your body's instincts and build positive expectations for childbirth

Are you terrified by the prospect of childbirth?

Does the mere thought of it fill your mind with images of pain and horror?

It's perfectly normal to feel scared, even terrified, of giving birth. Many women feel this way in the leadup to childbirth, and when you look at the way it is portrayed in the media it is hardly surprising. Of course, it's not helped by the fact that women who go through painful births are often the first to share their stories, while those who have an easier time may keep quiet.

Your mind may be filled with negative images based on what you've seen on TV, or stories you've heard from friends or family. If a close family member has had a painful birth experience, you may worry that your experience will be similar. But every woman is different, and every birth experience is unique. There is no reason to expect that your experience will mirror those of other family members.

Let your instincts take over

The good news is that childbirth is not invariably a painful, drawn-out experience. Many times it is actually the anxiety and tension itself that interferes with what should be a perfectly natural, instinctive process. If you can learn to relax and trust in your body's ability to do what women have been successfully doing for thousands of generations, you give your body an excellent chance of delivering your baby quickly and comfortably.

When you can approach childbirth with a relaxed attitude and avoid consciously trying to control the process, you will find that a "deeper you" takes over. This deeper you operates at the subconscious level, driven by a powerful instinct that has evolved over hundreds of thousands of years. When you let this primal instinct take the reins, you can simply focus on relaxing and letting your body do what it needs to do.

Reduce Stress During Pregnancy & Childbirth

pregnancy and birth.jpg

Being newly pregnant depicts vibrant health, joyousness and excited expectation.

However without wishing to unduly cause stress this is not often the case. Many pregnant women experience morning sickness, mood swings, anxiety about labour and fear caused by concerns about breast feeding.

Although normal stress has been shown to be healthy, excess stress has been proven by research published in the Lancet Medical Journal to cause problems not only in the mother but also as early as 17 weeks after conception in the unborn child.

Preparation using relaxation, overcoming anxiety, mentally rehearsing childbirth and allaying fears can all help to alleviate this stress.

It has been proven that the brain is unable to differentiate between an imagined even and a real even in terms of emotions.

So using self hypnosis: Imagine if….you could feel relaxed and enjoy your prgnancy
Imagine that …you knew you how to reduce and manage pain

Imagine that…you know you could free yourself from fears or anxiety

Imagine….feeling  relaxed and feel calm, no matter what is going on around you

Hypnotherapy and counselling can be used to teach you the above methods and alleviate fears and anxieties.
