You Can Do It

5 tips for better goal setting

We all have certain goals that we would like to achieve at different stages in our lives. However, not all of us are able to meet them.  Though we know what our goals are, we can’t bring ourselves to achieve them most of the times, because there is many a slip between the cup and the lip. More often than not, the reason for not meeting our goals is not setting a pre-defined path for the same. Here are five tips that we can all follow to set ourselves better goals and work towards achieving them within the specified timeframe.

1.      Choose goals that are valuable to you

Never set a goal because your friend or parent asked you to do so. You should always set goals that help you improve personally and professionally. Will I become a better human being when I achieve this goal? How will it improve my overall personality development? Will this goal help me in finding my core competency? These are some of the questions that you should think about when setting a goal, to be assured of 100% success while achieving them. When you set goals that add value to your lives and motivate you, you are more likely to work towards achieving them.

2.      Use the SMART method

Mostly, there is ambiguity in your minds while setting goals and achieving them, because you didn’t care enough for the small details. This is why following the SMART system is very important while setting goals. Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound goals need to be set, irrespective of whether they are meant for personal or professional development. By following this technique, you are giving a defined structure to your goals and making them accurate, so that it becomes easy to achieve them.

3.      One step at a time

While it is important to focus on the big picture when setting goals, it is equally important to travel this path one step at a time. When you have a huge goal staring at you with a specified time-frame hanging over it, it may look all too daunting and intimidating for you. So, all you need to do is to break down the big goal into several smaller goals, so that it helps you concentrate more and  pursue each goal with ease and confidence.

4.      Write down your goals

It may seem to be a simple tip, but it helps! Write down all your goals with their time-frame on a chart paper and pin it in your room, so that you are constantly reminded of your goals, your progress and your path that is yet to be travelled. Writing down your priorities on a daily basis will also help you in managing your time effectively as you can only focus on those tasks that are important.

5.      Don’t be too hard on yourself

Setting goals and achieving them with 100% success rate is no mean task! You may not achieve 100% success in your first goal; however, you should never give up. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Give yourself a back-pat and carry on with your next attempt with renewed focus and lots of takeaways from your first attempt. After all, life is a journey that deserves to be enjoyed, isn’t it?

5 Reasons To Not Let Depression Control You Anymore!

depression.png with kimberley stapleton mind body soul spirit

Family – It can be very vexing to loved one’s when you are depressed. On one hand they want nothing but the best for you, but on the other they sometimes get frustrated and wonder why you can’t simply snap out of it. It can be particularly hard on children of someone with depression as it may affect their outlook on life for many years to come. Having experienced this myself, I can say definitely this the number one reason to fight your depression.

Work - Work life generally suffers when in the throws of depression. It is more difficult to concentrate and not as easy to create and maintain good professional working relationships and partnerships. Furthermore, it makes being a “Self-starter” more unlikely. Rather than moving forward, maintaining the status-quo becomes more acceptable, even if only unconsciously.

Love – The love life of a person with depression can suffer tremendously. Regardless of How much someone may profess their dedication to another person, if the other person can never see the bright side, it can wear on them. Life is short, right? Love conquers A WHOLE LOT, but it doesn’t conquer everything. Sometimes we must add internal fortitude to love to truly be invincible. Besides isn’t it better to fight, not just for you, but for this person that you love as well?

Health – University studies have proven that people who are depressed are more likely to get sick, and more likely to die of an illness than those who are content. It is in your benefit, health wise, to fight your depression as well. A recent New York Times article, citing a University study, indicated that persons who have been diagnosed as depressed have more hospital visits, and a shorter lifespan.

Prosperity – The depressed person sometimes lacks clarity of thought, and may miss golden opportunities to improve their lives if only they had been paying attention. This may be, perhaps, the most important point, since many people believe they would be happier if only this part of their life, or that part of their life, etc was different. Allowing good things to happen in your life might just give you the jump start needed to end the cycle of depression and self imposed-isolation( even if only figuratively ).

Fighting depression can help your life in many ways. In some ways, the fight in itself is also a reward. You become stronger, do better at work, have better relationships, and can focus on what is really important in life so that you can improve it, for yourself, your family, friends, and loved ones.

Avoiding Depression ~ Dealing With Burnout

Depression.png with kimberley stapleton mind body soul spirit

Our brains aren’t batteries but they can behave like batteries and get burnt out

We Are Often told To Push On Through or Simply Try Harder

However this can lead to burn out. .

When engaging in various multi-tasking activities or working for prolonged periods over a prolonged period of time, it is possible to over extend our brains. And then we can exhaust not only our physical strength but in order to conserve energy our brains in a very simplistic way will just refuse to cooperate and do what we ask of them, this is called burn out or anxiety depression.

In this day and age due to outside pressures maybe from management or even from family responsibilities, exposure to continual bad news, themselves and also internal worries and anxieties many people cannot fathom the idea of relaxing and taking what’s now called down time.

Continual exposure to stressful situations, like caring for an ill family member, working long hours, or witnessing upsetting news related to politics and school safety can lead to this stress condition.

When the brain starts to go into to burn out they can then add to these pressures by starting to worry about “not working” and often push even harder

What is burnout?

Coined by the psychologist, Herbert Freudenberger in the 1970s, burnout describes a severe stress condition that leads to severe physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion.

Much worse than ordinary fatigue, burnout makes it challenging for people to cope with stress and handle day-to-day responsibilities.

People experiencing burnout often feel like they have nothing left to give and may dread getting out of bed each morning. They may even adopt a pessimistic outlook toward life and feel hopeless.

Burnout doesn’t go away on its own and, if left untreated, it can lead to serious physical and psychological illnesses like depression, heart disease, and diabetes.

Who gets burnout?

Anyone who’s continually exposed to high levels of stress can experience burnout. Helping professionals, such as first responders, doctors, and nurses are especially vulnerable to this health condition.

Along with career-induced burnout, people caring for children can also have this type of extreme exhaustion. A recent study found that, just like doctors and business executives, mothers and fathers can also burn out.

Personality characteristics like needing to be in control, perfectionism, and being “Type A” can also increase your risk of burnout.

What are signs of burnout?

Worried that you may be experiencing burnout but unsure of the signs? We’ve compiled a list of symptoms that you can use as a guide.

  • Exhaustion. Feeling physically and emotionally depleted. Physical symptoms may include headaches, stomach aches, and appetite or sleeping changes.

  • Isolation. People with burnout tend to feel overwhelmed. As a result, they may stop socializing and confiding in friends, family members, and co-workers.

  • Escape fantasies. Dissatisfied with the never-ending demands of their jobs, people with burnout may fantasize about running away or going on a solo-vacation. In extreme cases, they may turn to drugs, alcohol, or food as a way to numb their emotional pain.

  • Irritability. Burnout can cause people to lose their cool with friends, co-workers, and family members more easily. Coping with normal stressors like preparing for a work meeting, driving kids to school, and tending to household tasks also may start to feel insurmountable, especially when things don’t go as planned.

  • Frequent illnesses. Burnout, like other long-term stress, can lower your immune system, making you more susceptible to colds, the flu, and insomnia. Burnout can also lead to mental health concerns like depression and anxiety.

The 12 stages of burnout

Unlike a cold or the flu, burnout doesn’t hit all at once.

Psychologists Herbert Freudenberger and Gail North have outlined the 12 phases of this stress

  • Excessive drive/ambition. Common for people starting a new job or undertaking a novel task, too much ambition can lead to burnout.

  • Pushing yourself to work harder. Ambition pushes you to work harder.

  • Neglecting your own needs. You begin to sacrifice self-care like sleep, exercise, and eating well.

  • Displacement of conflict. Instead of acknowledging that you’re pushing yourself to the max, you blame your boss, the demands of your job, or colleagues for your troubles.

  • No time for nonwork-related needs. You begin to withdraw from family and friends. Social invitations to parties, movies, and dinner dates start to feel burdensome, instead of enjoyable.

  • Denial. Impatience with those around you mounts. Instead of taking responsibility for your behaviors, you blame others, seeing them as incompetent, lazy, and overbearing.

  • Withdrawal. You begin to withdraw from family and friends. Social invitations to parties, movies, and dinner dates start to feel burdensome, instead of enjoyable.

  • Behavioral changes. Those on the road to burnout may become more aggressive and snap at loved ones for no reason.

  • Depersonalization. Feeling detached from your life and your ability to control your life.

  • Inner emptiness or anxiety. Feeling empty or anxious. You may turn to thrill seeking behaviors to cope with this emotion, such as substance use, gambling, or overeating.

  • Depression. Life loses its meaning and you begin to feel hopeless.

  • Mental or physical collapse. This can impact your ability to cope. Mental health or medical attention may be necessary.

    How to prevent burnout

Stress may be unavoidable, but burnout is preventable. Following these steps may help you thwart stress from getting the best of you:

    Exercise

Not only is exercise good for our physical health, but it can also give us an emotional boost.

Stretched for time? You don’t need to spend hours at the gym to reap these benefits. Mini-workouts and short walks are convenient ways to make exercise a daily habit.

    Eat a balanced diet

Eating a healthy diet filled with omega-3 fatty acids can be a natural antidepressant. Adding foods rich in omega-3s like flaxseed oil, walnuts, and fish may help give your mood a boost.

    Practice good sleep habits

Our bodies need time to rest and reset, which is why healthy sleep habits are essential for our well-being.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, avoiding caffeine before bedtime, establishing a relaxing bedtime ritual, and banning smartphones from the bedroom can help promote sound sleep hygiene.

    Ask for help

During stressful times, it’s important to reach out for help. If asking for assistance feels difficult, consider developing a self-care “check-in” with close friends and family members so that you can take care of each other during trying times.

Addiction To Numbness & Inner Child Healing

numbness.png with kimberley stapleton mind body soul spirit

A client of mine ( name changed for anonymity) asked me to share her story because she wanted others to know that they are not alone and that with a little help it is possible to heal .. please note there may be distressing information here

Linda* sat opposite me at one of my 1 on 1 Inner Child Healing Retreats. She had decided to attend the Intensive because her depression, which had plagued her for years, was not being helped by medication or by the numerous forms of therapy that she had tried.

As she sat opposite me, telling me about her past and her depression, I felt like I was sitting with a person who had stuffed herself into a box and closed the door. There was a sense of emptiness and numbness that emanated from her.

"Linda," I asked her. "When did you first feel this numbness that I feel coming from you?"

Linda started to cry. "I was 9 years old when my uncle sexually abused me. He and my aunt lived a few blocks from our house. I went to visit my aunt and she wasn't home but my uncle was, which had never happened before.

He told me not to tell anyone but I ran home and told my mom about what he had made me do to him. As traumatic as the sexual abuse was, I was equally traumatised when my mother didn't believe me and punished me for lying. I felt so devastated and alone. Everything changed for me from that moment on.

Before that, I was a happy girl who did well in school. After that, I don't remember feeling happy and my grades kept going down."

"Linda, there is an incredibly painful feeling that you felt when your uncle abused you and when you mother didn't believe you and punished you. You were too young to handle this feeling so you did the best thing you could do, which was to shut down and numb out. Our language doesn't have a good word for this feeling. The closest words we have are heartbreak and intense loneliness."

"Yes," said Linda. That's the feeling. I remember how overwhelmed I felt by that feeling. I felt like if I kept feeling it I would die or go crazy, so I shut it down by numbing out."

"Right. But now, as an adult, you can actually handle the feelings of loneliness and heartbreak, yet you are still avoiding them. By avoiding them with numbing out, you are stifling your true Self, your core Self. And so you end up depressed. We will always end up depressed when we put a lid on ourselves to avoid feelings we believe we can't handle."

"But I still don't think I can handle those feelings."

"Linda, are you willing to find out if that is true?"

"Yes."

Over the next few days we did some gentle Inner child work and these are her words

"I am feeling much better, much lighter. I don't have that numbness right now. And I don't feel depressed right now!"

"So by acknowledging, embracing and moving into compassion for your feelings of heartbreak and loneliness, they moved through you. You show your inner self that you CAN manage these feelings. You no longer have to avoid them by numbing out."

Linda had become addicted to numbness as her way of managing her feelings, but during our time together using various techniques and therapies, once she learned to be with them with compassion, she no longer needed the numbness.

I heard from her a couple of months after the Intensive and she was still feeling light and happy, with no sign of depression.

Love Addiction, Approval Addiction

approval.png with kimberley stapleton mind body soul spirit

In my experience as a counsellor & Hypnotherapist for 35 years, I have found that love addiction and approval addiction are far more prevalent than any other substance or process addictions. We live in a love-addicted, approval-addicted society.

What does it mean to be love/approval addicted? Below is a checklist for you to see if you are addicted to love and/or approval. Believing any of these may indicate love or approval addiction.

I believe that:

* My happiness and wellbeing are depended upon getting love from another person.

* My adequacy, lovability, and feelings of self-worth and self-esteem come from others liking me and approving of me.

* Others disapproval or rejection mean that I’m not good enough.

* I can’t make myself happy.

* I can’t make myself as happy as someone else can.

* My best feelings come from outside myself, from how other people or a particular other person sees me and treats me.

* Others are responsible for my feelings. Therefore, if someone cares about me, he or she will never do anything that hurts or upsets me.

* I can’t be alone. I feel like I’ll die if I’m alone.

* When I’m hurt or upset, it’s someone else’s fault.

* It’s up to other people to make me feel good about myself by approving of me.

* I’m not responsible for my feelings. Other people make me feel happy, sad, angry, frustrated, shut down, or depressed. When I’m angry, someone makes me feel that way and is responsible for fixing my feelings.

* I’m not responsible for my behaviour. Other people make me yell, act crazy, get sick, laugh, cry, get violent, leave, or fail.

* Others are selfish if they do what they want instead of what I want or need.

* If I’m not connected to someone, I will die.

* I can’t handle my pain, especially the pain of disapproval, rejection, abandonment, the pain of being shut out - the pain of isolation and loneliness.

Living as a love or approval addict is a very hard way to live. You have to constantly make sure you say the right thing, do the right, and look right in order to get the needed love and approval. Your feelings are on a roller coaster – from feeling the wonderful feelings that come from getting your love or approval “fix” to feeling the despair that comes when your “supply” – the source of your love and approval - shuts down, gets angry or judgmental, or goes away.

THE UNDERLYING CAUSE OF LOVE AND APPROVAL ADDICTION

Love and approval addiction is rooted in self-abandonment. Imagine the feeling part of you as a child – your inner child. When you are love or approval addicted, you have handed your inner child away for adoption.

Instead of learning to take responsibility for your own happiness by loving and approving of yourself, you have handed your inner child away to others for love and approval – making others responsible for your feelings. This inner self-abandonment will always cause the deep pain of low self-worth, making you dependent upon others for your sense of worth.

The sad thing about all of this is that love is the most abundant thing in the universe. We live in a sea of love – it is always within us and all around us. It is our Source. When you learn to open to re connect with your inner child you become filled with love, with peace, with joy. The empty place within that yearns to be filled becomes so filled with love that it overflows to others. You find yourself desiring to give love rather than always trying to get it.

As long as you make others your Source, you will not find the love, peace and joy that you seek. By learning and practicing the Inner Child Bonding process that I teach, you can learn to fill yourself with love and heal your love and approval addictions.

Are you love or approval addicted? The above checklist will help you to determine your level of love or approval addiction.

If You feel that this is you and would like to talk then;

How to Get Your Drive Back

inspiration.png with kimberley stapleton, mind body soul spirit

Using Hypnotherapy to naturally restore your energy and enthusiasm for life

Are you feeling dull, listless and uninspired, even though you can't point to any specific 'problem'?

Do you get a sense of everything having turned flat and uninteresting, even things that you used to enjoy and get enthused about?

Everybody has 'down times' when life just feels more of a struggle than usual, even if you have no major 'problems' going on. That's a normal part of life and usually we get past such episodes and life picks up again and we forget all about it.

But sometimes the greyness and dullness can hang around rather too long and then you may well begin to wonder what's up.

Check the basics first if you want to get your drive back

It's always a good idea to go back to basics first. Are you getting enough decent sleep? Exercise? Relaxation? What are you eating (and drinking) every day?

These things have a huge influence on your mood and energy levels and are out of kilter, you may need to make adjustments to re-establish a reasonably healthy lifestyle for yourself. You may also want to check in with your doctor to rule out medical factors.

Your psychological state is also a major influence on drive

But your mood and motivation depend on more than your physical state. In fact, even if your physical state is excellent, psychological factors can plunge you into gloom and deprive you of all enthusiasm and energy. So it is essential to ensure that your emotional and mental states are also working well together if you want to get the most out of life.

This doesn't necessarily mean that you need to sign up for therapy right now. It means that you need to understand the simple psychological principles that influence how much you enjoy life and how much energy you can give to what you do. And you need to apply them in the same way that you look after other elements of your lifestyle.

What's the quickest and easiest way to get that sorted?

Why hypnotherapy is a powerful way to get your drive back

  • your energy levels rise

  • you feel a stronger sense of autonomy and ability to make choices

  • you understand more deeply what is really important to you

  • you are motivated to take concrete positive steps in pursuit of goals

  • you get passionate again about old (and new) interests

Coming Out of Depression

mind body soul spirit with kimberley depression.jpg

How Hypnotherapy can lift the dark clouds and give you a break from the darkness

Why is it when you are depressed you simply can't see any way out?

Why do things always appear at their worst, even if you know things look better at other times?

The reason is that depression exhausts your brain, and so makes you interpret reality in black or white, extreme and negative ways.

Depression, or 'nervous exhaustion'

Depression is exhaustion brought about by an incredibly stressful or emotional time. Over-worrying and over-analysing, inward-looking negative rumination all cause and maintain depression.

One way to get a quick break from this onslaught is to get deep relaxation. This can give your brain the rest it needs and partially restore your depleted resources. Regular relaxation can help lift depression as part of a wider depression treatment program.

How hypnosis can help with depression

During the session, you'll first notice how deeply you relax (depressed people often relax faster and deeper than anyone else because their brain is so in need of it).

Then, you'll start to see things in more optimistic ways, perhaps just a glimmer at first, then more and more as you continue to use the session.

And as you continue to use the uplifting hypnosis session, the cumulative effect of repeated deep relaxation and positive suggestion will help you feel more energized and positive in a more general way.

If you feel that Hypnotherapy could help you, then,

Sleep Deep, Sleep Long

Stop Waking Up in the Middle of the Night

Enjoy consistently restful sleep with a gentle, permissive hypnotherapy session.

Do you frequently wake up in the middle of the night?

Are you finding this is affecting your energy, mood and focus?

A good night's sleep strengthens your immune system and gives your body the chance to heal and restore itself. It helps your mind as well, having a positive impact on:

  • Memory

  • Reaction times

  • Creativity

  • Overall mood.

So it stands to reason that interrupted sleep is detrimental to both your physical and mental health.

But what causes you to have a bad night's sleep?

The sleep-stealing culprits

There can be many reasons for a disrupted sleep pattern.

Sleep apnea, for instance, prompts micro-awakenings as the person has trouble breathing in their sleep and repeatedly gasps for air. If this is a problem for you, it's important to see a medical professional.

But if, like many, the reason for your poor sleep isn't as clear, there are a few things you can look at.

Lifestyle, environmental, and psychological factors all affect our quality of sleep. Specific causes include:

  • Too much food or alcohol near bedtime

  • A bedroom that is too warm, too noisy or too light

  • Conditioning yourself to be mentally active in the bedroom by using phones, a TV or doing work

  • Ongoing stress and anxiety.

Sleep is a natural process of drifting from deep stages to lighter ones where you may even become aware of the room. These changes happen at 90-minute intervals and it's important to be relaxed so that this natural process can occur.

How to recondition your mind to sleep better with hypnotherapy so that you;

  • Are free from those old patterns of worry about sleep

  • Glide between the stages of sleep smoothly

  • Don't remember the lighter stages of sleep the next day

  • Enjoy good quality rest each night.
